Swansea City substitute Zan Vipotnik delivered a stunning stoppage-time equaliser to deny Leeds United victory in a dramatic 2-2 Championship clash at Elland Road.
Leeds looked set to claim all three points after Willy Gnonto’s 86th-minute strike, but Vipotnik’s last-gasp effort ensured Swansea left with a hard-fought draw.
Leeds United wasted no time in making an impact as Brenden Aaronson found the net inside just 35 seconds. The American midfielder capitalised on a defensive lapse, slotting home from close range to give the hosts an early lead.
Swansea had a golden opportunity to respond in the 13th minute when they were awarded a penalty after Joe Rodon fouled Lewis O’Brien. However, Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier pulled off a crucial save to deny Josh Tymon from the spot, preserving his team’s advantage.
Despite the setback, Swansea continued to push forward and were eventually rewarded in the 64th minute. Leeds' shot-stopper Meslier failed to claim a corner, allowing Harry Darling to pounce and fire the visitors level.
The equaliser sparked fresh intensity from Leeds, and they regained the lead through substitute Willy Gnonto, whose powerful strike in the 86th minute looked to have sealed the victory for Daniel Farke’s men.
Just when it seemed Leeds had done enough, Swansea had the final say. In the sixth minute of stoppage time, Vipotnik latched onto a loose ball and rifled a shot past Meslier, breaking Leeds fans’ hearts and securing a crucial point for the Swans.
The game was played in an emotional atmosphere as Leeds paid tribute to Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight, two fans who tragically lost their lives in Istanbul before the club’s UEFA Cup clash against Galatasaray in 2000. A minute’s applause was held before kickoff and again in the 25th minute to honour their memory.
Leeds were boosted by the return of captain Ethan Ampadu after a six-week injury layoff, while Swansea’s resilience was epitomised by their determination to fight until the final whistle.
