Sunderland defender Dennis Cirkin could be facing a spell on the sidelines after being forced to withdraw from the England U21 squad due to injury.
The club confirmed on their website that Cirkin sustained the injury during Sunderland’s 3-0 defeat to Coventry City. The 22-year-old was substituted in the 69th minute at the Coventry Building Society Arena, with Jenson Seelt replacing him in what was another difficult outing for Regis Le Bris’ side.
This setback means Cirkin will miss out on linking up with Lee Carsley’s England U21 squad, marking a disappointing end to what would have been his first Three Lions call-up since featuring for the U19s in 2021.
The left-back has previously represented England at U20, U18, U17, and U16 levels.
Sunderland have confirmed that Cirkin will now undergo further assessments by the club’s medical team, with updates on his condition to follow.
Meanwhile, England U21s are set to face France at Lorient’s Stade du Moustoir tonight, before returning to home soil for a fixture against Portugal at The Hawthorns on Monday evening.
