The United Kingdom is on track to host the 2035 FIFA Women’s World Cup, with FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirming it is the only valid bid received.
Last month, the four football associations of the UK officially announced their joint bid, backed by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who emphasized that football is part of the nation’s "core identity."
Speaking about the potential tournament, Starmer stated:
“The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2035 on home turf would be another monumental moment in our sporting history, driving growth and leaving a lasting legacy. The FAs’ intention to bid has my government’s full support.”
With the official bid submission deadline now passed, Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, who had previously considered a joint bid, appear to be out of contention following Infantino’s latest comments.
FIFA will review the UK’s bid in late 2026, before making an official announcement on the 2035 host nation. If successful, this will mark the first World Cup on UK soil since 1996.
Infantino also confirmed that the USA is the sole bidder for the 2031 Women’s World Cup, with potential co-hosting opportunities for other Concacaf nations. Concacaf oversees football in North America, Central America, and the Caribbean.
The last FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023 saw England’s Lionesses reach the final, only to suffer a 1-0 defeat to Spain, with the decisive goal coming in the 29th minute.
