Shrewsbury Town have named Michael Appleton as their new head coach on a deal until the end of the season, following the departure of Gareth Ainsworth to League Two side Gillingham.
The 49-year-old former Manchester United midfielder brings a wealth of managerial experience, having previously managed Portsmouth, Blackpool, Blackburn Rovers, Leicester City, Lincoln City, Oxford United, and Charlton Athletic.
Appleton’s 14-year coaching career includes a successful promotion campaign with Oxford United, and he now takes charge at Shrewsbury for what will be his eighth managerial appointment.
Appleton will be joined by assistant head coach Richard O'Donnell, who has worked alongside him at Lincoln, Blackpool, and Charlton, ensuring continuity and familiarity in the coaching setup.
Following Ainsworth’s unexpected departure, Town’s director of football, Micky Moore, emphasized the club’s need to act swiftly in appointing the right candidate:
"It's been a difficult seven days. But once Gareth Ainsworth made the decision to leave, it was important we acted quickly to find the right man to guide us through the remainder of the season."
With Shrewsbury battling to secure their place in League One, Appleton’s immediate focus will be on stabilizing the team and ensuring a strong finish to the campaign.
