Premier League clubs are expected to approve an early summer transfer window, aligning with FIFA’s new regulations. If passed, the window will open from June 1 to June 10, giving clubs an early advantage in the transfer market.
A super-majority of 14 clubs is needed to approve the proposal at a Premier League meeting in London on Thursday. FIFA’s interim transfer window, approved last October, was originally designed for leagues with Club World Cup participants.
However, this early window will apply to all Premier League clubs, not just Manchester City and Chelsea, who will feature in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
If the early window is adopted, FIFA’s 12-week limit on closed-season transfer windows means the summer transfer deadline will move to August 14—just two days before the start of the 2025/26 season.
This wouldn’t be the first time the Premier League’s transfer window dates have changed.
In 2018 and 2019, the window closed before the season started, but clubs later reverted to the original system after finding it put them at a disadvantage compared to other European leagues.
Despite FIFA’s efforts to standardize the transfer calendar, reports from The Telegraph indicate that persuading other leagues to adopt the early window has proven difficult. Without alignment across Europe, Premier League clubs could face competitive disadvantages.
New England head coach Thomas Tuchel has criticized the June international window, arguing that it disrupts player schedules:
“Not everyone plays a Champions League final or club final, so there is this awkward period for players. They get 10 to 14 days off, then go to internationals, while others are already on holiday. It’s not ideal for anyone, especially the players.”
Tuchel has called on FIFA to reassess the international calendar to ensure better player welfare.
If FIFA’s early window becomes universal across Europe, it could impact major transfers—such as Trent Alexander-Arnold’s potential move from Liverpool to Real Madrid.
Real Madrid have agreed to sign the right-back but could the fee now pose a problem before the Club World Cup kicks off on June 14.
Since Alexander-Arnold’s contract expires on June 30, the early window could help Liverpool negotiate a transfer fee instead of losing him for free.
