Messi Scores Instantly on Return, Lifts Inter Miami to 2-1 Victory Over Philadelphia Union
Lionel Messi wasted no time making his mark after returning to Inter Miami's lineup, scoring just two minutes after coming off the bench to secure a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Union. The victory propelled the Herons to the top of Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference standings.
Messi, who had been sidelined with an adductor injury, entered the match in the 55th minute and made an immediate impact in the 57th. Receiving a pass from longtime teammate Luis Suárez on the right side of the penalty box, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner deftly maneuvered past defenders before slotting a right-footed strike into the net, doubling Miami’s lead.
The goal marked Messi’s second in three MLS appearances this season, as he continues to deliver for an Inter Miami squad that remains undefeated in league play (4-0-1) and boasts an 8-0-1 record across all competitions, including CONCACAF Champions Cup matches.
Robert Taylor opened the scoring for Miami in the 23rd minute, finishing off an assist from Benjamin Cremaschi and Jordi Alba. Messi then replaced Taylor in the second half and wasted no time extending the lead, with Suárez and Fafa Picault credited for the assists.
Philadelphia pulled one back in the 80th minute through Daniel Gazdag, but Miami held firm to claim all three points.
Messi’s return was highly anticipated after he missed multiple games, including two World Cup qualifiers for Argentina. Despite also managing a thigh issue, the World Cup-winning captain was cleared to play earlier in the week, and his presence was felt immediately.
Inter Miami now shifts focus to the CONCACAF Champions Cup, where they will face LAFC on Wednesday before resuming MLS action next Sunday against Toronto FC. Meanwhile, the Union return home to host Orlando City next Saturday.
