Matlock Town are pleased to announce the appointment of Adam Clayton as interim first-team manager until the end of the season.
Clayton, 36, has been a pivotal figure in Matlock Town’s midfield since joining earlier this season. With an impressive playing career spanning the Premier League and Championship, he brings vast experience to the role.
Having served as a player-coach under former manager Ryan Cresswell, who departed on Sunday, Clayton now takes charge and aims to revitalize the squad’s fortunes for the remainder of the campaign.
Joining Clayton in the dugout will be Steve Eyre, an experienced coach with a long-standing background in professional football.
He spent 21 years at Manchester City, guiding youth players to five league titles and the 2008 FA Youth Cup. The former Rochdale manager and has held coaching roles at Huddersfield Town, Chesterfield, Doncaster Rovers, and Fleetwood Town.
Speaking about his appointment, Clayton expressed excitement about the challenge ahead:
"I'm very excited by this opportunity and confident we can turn things around. This squad is full of talent, and it's about injecting confidence, belief, and a winning mentality."
He also acknowledged the impact of former manager Ryan Cresswell, stating:
"Ryan was a big reason why I joined Matlock, and he has given me his full support in stepping up. Continuity is key, and I already know the squad, their strengths, and the areas we need to improve."
Clayton emphasized Eyre’s influence on his career:
"I first met Steve when I was seven at Manchester City’s academy. He later worked with me at both Huddersfield and Doncaster. His experience from over 1,000 games will be invaluable in shaping our approach."
