Gillingham FC are on the verge of appointing Gareth Ainsworth as their new manager, replacing John Coleman, as they battle to secure their League Two status.
Currently sitting 19th in League Two, the Gills had brought in Coleman in January on a short-term deal, but after managing just two wins in 14 games, the club has decided to make another managerial change.
Ainsworth, 51, only took charge of Shrewsbury Town in November, inheriting a side at the bottom of League One. Despite securing five wins in 22 games, the club remains bottom of the table, sitting 14 points from safety with just nine matches left to play.
Despite his best efforts, Ainsworth now looks set to drop down a division to take on a new challenge at Gillingham. His departure means Shrewsbury will now be searching for their third manager of the season as they fight for survival.
Ainsworth’s appointment marks Gillingham’s fifth managerial change in just 18 months, following the departures of Neil Harris, Stephen Clemence, Mark Bonner, and John Coleman. The club has struggled for stability, and fans will be hoping Ainsworth can bring long-term success.
"This news has truly caught the club by surprise. Ainsworth had spoken about wanting to build something long-term at Shrewsbury, similar to his time at Wycombe.
The club fought hard to keep him, even offering a two-year contract extension regardless of which league they were in. However, once Gillingham triggered his release clause, the move became inevitable."
