Brazil have officially sacked manager Dorival Junior after a crushing 4-1 defeat to arch-rivals Argentina in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Despite sitting fourth in the South American standings with five losses in 14 matches, Brazil remain on course to qualify for the tournament. However, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) decided to part ways with the 62-year-old coach, citing the team's disappointing performances.
Appointed in January 2024, Dorival Junior had previously managed several top clubs in Brazil before taking charge of the national team. His reign began on a high note with a 1-0 friendly victory over England at Wembley in March, but his overall record stood at seven wins, six draws, and three defeats in 16 games.
The decision to dismiss him came swiftly after Argentina's dominant performance, which secured their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Following Dorival Junior’s departure, the CBF released a statement, saying:
"The board wishes him success in his continued career. From now on, the CBF will work to find a replacement."
Brazil will now look for a new head coach to lead them into the final stretch of World Cup qualifying and beyond.
