Andrea Berta is expected to arrive in the UK within the next 72 hours, as Arsenal finalize his appointment as their new sporting director.
The 53-year-old Italian has been in advanced talks to become the permanent successor to Edu, who departed the Emirates Stadium in late 2024.
Following Edu’s exit, Jason Ayto was named interim sporting director and emerged as a strong contender for the permanent role. Other candidates included Real Sociedad’s Roberto Olabe and former Manchester United sporting director Dan Ashworth.
However, Arsenal have now moved forward with Berta, who is set to officially begin his new role once the club makes the formal announcement.
Berta arrives with a reputation as one of Europe’s top sporting directors. His career began with Italian clubs Parma and Genoa, before joining Atletico Madrid in 2013 as a technical director.
During his time in Spain, Berta played a key role in recruiting stars such as Rodri, Antoine Griezmann, and Jan Oblak, helping establish Atletico Madrid as a dominant force in La Liga and European football.
There is optimism that Berta will be present for Arsenal’s Premier League clash against Fulham on Tuesday, marking his first public appearance in his new role.
