Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has refused to comment on the future of Trent Alexander-Arnold, as speculation grows that the Reds’ vice-captain will leave for Real Madrid when his contract expires.
Reports from Spain suggest that Los Blancos are increasingly confident of securing Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer, with the England international expected to join Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham at the Bernabéu.
Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s Merseyside derby clash with Everton, Slot addressed the situation, saying:
"His situation is, unfortunately, that he is injured. Otherwise, people would have spoken about his performances for England.
He is fully focused on his recovery. For the rest, there have been talks about him, Virgil [van Dijk], and Mo [Salah] for the last eight or nine months—it doesn’t affect us at all."
Former Liverpool midfielder Graeme Souness has urged fans to not be overly critical of Alexander-Arnold’s potential departure, acknowledging the player’s long-term contributions to the club.
"I understand the frustration of Liverpool supporters over Trent’s decision, but I don’t think they can be too critical. He has given 20 years of service, won six trophies, and could soon add a second Premier League title. Now, he wants a new challenge—should we begrudge him that?"
Souness also suggested that the timing of the leak was unfortunate but likely not from Alexander-Arnold or his camp, given that Liverpool is still competing for the Premier League title.
With contract talks unresolved, all eyes will be on Alexander-Arnold’s next move, as Liverpool battles for silverware and prepares for a potential major squad transition this summer.
