Denmark's national team doctor has delivered a positive injury update on Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel following his shoulder injury sustained in the Nations League clash against Portugal on Sunday.
Despite the 38-year-old being in clear discomfort, he played the entire match as Denmark coach Brian Riemer had already used all of his substitutions during their 5-3 aggregate loss to Roberto Martinez’s Portugal.
Speaking after the match, Riemer admitted he wanted to substitute Schmeichel but had no choice but to leave him on the pitch.
"If it had been possible, I would have replaced Kasper Schmeichel because he was injured, but we had already made all our substitutions.
We talked about him coming off, but he insisted on staying. As long as he could stand in goal, it was better for us to have 11 players on the field rather than going down to nine outfield players with an emergency goalkeeper."
Denmark’s team doctor Morten Boesen has since provided a reassuring update on Schmeichel’s condition, confirming that initial X-ray scans did not show any serious damage.
"Kasper Schmeichel's left shoulder was X-rayed last night, and fortunately, the images do not show anything abnormal.
He is clearly in pain after falling on his shoulder, so we are examining him further with an MRI scan."
Before his injury, Schmeichel was heavily involved in the match, saving a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty just six minutes into the game.
Despite his heroics, Denmark suffered from defensive errors, including a Joachim Andersen own goal. Goals from Rasmus Kristensen, Christian Eriksen, and Francisco Trincão shaped a dramatic extra-time battle, with PSG’s Gonçalo Ramos sealing a 5-2 win on the night and a 5-3 aggregate victory for Portugal.
With an MRI scan still pending, Celtic fans will be eagerly awaiting further updates on Schmeichel’s fitness. If the injury proves to be minor, the experienced shot-stopper could return to action soon. However, if further tests reveal a more serious issue, it could impact Celtic’s season as they fight for domestic and European success.
