Everton could be without Vitaliy Mykolenko for next week’s crucial Merseyside derby against Liverpool, after the left-back suffered an injury during Ukraine’s 3-0 defeat to Belgium in the Nations League on Sunday.
Mykolenko dropped to the ground in the 67th minute and was unable to continue, forcing Ukraine to replace him with Bogdan Mykhaylichenko.
After the game, Ukraine manager Serhiy Rebrov confirmed the Everton defender’s injury could be serious, stating:
“Unfortunately, he has an injury, he will do an MRI, we'll see. I know Vitaliy. If he didn't continue playing, then the injury was really serious.”
Ukrainian journalist Zorya Londonsk also provided an update, revealing on X (formerly Twitter):
“Mykolenko confirms to us in the mixed zone that it’s a thigh injury he picked up today (not clear if it’s front or back or what exactly). He will wait and see the seriousness of it when he returns to Everton tomorrow.”
If Mykolenko is ruled out, it would be a significant setback for Everton. The 25-year-old has been a key player, starting 27 of Everton’s 29 Premier League matches this season, and featuring in every game since David Moyes took charge in January.
The last time Mykolenko missed a league match was back on October 5, when a calf issue kept him out of a goalless draw against Newcastle United. He was also a fitness doubt ahead of February’s Merseyside derby due to a minor knock.
If the Ukrainian defender is unavailable, Ashley Young is the most likely replacement at left-back. However, Nathan Patterson could also fill in if needed.
Everton’s clash with Liverpool is a must-win game as the Toffees look to secure their Premier League status. Losing Mykolenko for this high-stakes fixture would undoubtedly be a blow to their defensive stability.
