Virgil van Dijk Signs New Two-Year Contract with Liverpool FC
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has officially signed a new two-year contract extension with the club, keeping him at Anfield until 2027. The 33-year-old Dutch defender had been nearing the end of his previous deal, which was set to expire this summer.
Van Dijk joins teammate Mohamed Salah, who signed a new two-year extension last week, in committing his future to Liverpool Football Club.
"It was always Liverpool," Van Dijk said, shutting down rumors of a potential move to Paris Saint-Germain. "It was always in my head, it was always the plan, and it was always Liverpool."
Since arriving from Southampton in January 2018 for £75 million, Van Dijk has become one of the most influential figures at the club. With 314 appearances and a long list of honors—including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, and two EFL Cups—the Dutch international is a cornerstone of the Reds' modern era.
Named club captain in 2023 after the departure of Jordan Henderson, Van Dijk has continued to lead both on and off the pitch.
"There wasn’t any doubt in my head that this is the place to be for me and my family," he added. "Someone called me the other day an adopted Scouser. I'm really proud to hear these things—it gives me a great feeling."
Van Dijk has also been instrumental under new manager Arne Slot, as Liverpool pushes toward a record-equalling 20th English league title.
Earlier this year, Van Dijk admitted he was unsure about his future, but talks progressed positively in April. His decision to stay is seen as a huge boost for the club’s long-term ambitions.
