Manchester United to Play Post-Season Friendlies in Malaysia and Hong Kong
Manchester United have confirmed plans to travel to Asia for two post-season friendlies immediately after the conclusion of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign.
The Red Devils will face an ASEAN All Stars XI in Kuala Lumpur on 28 May, followed by a fixture against a Hong Kong select side just two days later on 30 May. The tour is expected to generate approximately $10 million (£7.8 million) in revenue.
United's final Premier League match of the season is scheduled for 25 May at Old Trafford against Aston Villa. The squad will then fly directly to Asia to fulfill the international tour commitments.
Following the short trip, Manchester United's international players will report to their national teams ahead of upcoming international fixtures.
In addition to the Asia tour, United will travel to the United States this summer to participate in the Premier League’s official pre-season tournament, taking place from 26 July to 3 August.
United boast a large fanbase in Malaysia, and Malaysia Airlines, one of the club’s official commercial partners, is backing the trip. This will be Manchester United’s first visit to Malaysia since 2009 and their first appearance in Hong Kong since 2013.
While post-season tours are becoming more common, they have raised concerns over fixture congestion and player burnout. Last year, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United faced criticism for flying to Australia after the season ended, with Alan Shearer labeling the move as “madness.”
With FIFA’s expanded Club World Cup and UEFA’s revised Champions League format adding more matches to the calendar, the strain on elite players continues to be a major talking point.
